Directives

Robots meta tags that tell search engines whether to index a page, follow its links or show its snippet.

  • Page images set to noimageindex: The page’s robots meta tag contains noimageindex, asking Google not to index the images on it, so they are unlikely to bring visitors from image search.
  • Page set to nofollow: The page’s robots meta tag contains nofollow, asking search engines not to follow any link on it, so the pages it links to lose a route to discovery.
  • Page set to noindex: The page’s robots meta tag contains noindex, telling search engines to leave it out of their results, and out of AI Overviews with them.
  • Page set to noindex and nofollow: The page’s robots meta tag says none, or noindex with nofollow, keeping the page out of search results and asking crawlers to ignore its links.
  • Page set to nosnippet: The page’s robots meta tag contains nosnippet, so Google shows no text preview for it and does not use its content as a direct input for AI Overviews.
  • Robots meta tag outside the head: The page’s robots meta tag ends up in the body of the HTML instead of the head, so search engines may not apply its rules as you intended.
