H1 Headings

The page’s main heading and where it sits in the heading structure.

  • H1 heading missing or empty: The page has no H1 heading with text in it, so visitors, screen readers and crawlers get no clear main heading.
  • H1 heading over 70 characters: The page’s main heading runs past 70 characters, which makes it slower to scan and often means it is doing a subtitle’s job.
  • H1 is not the first heading: Another heading comes before the page’s H1 in the HTML, so the page’s outline does not open with its main topic.
  • H1 with only image alt text: The page’s H1 holds only an image or icon, so its alt text becomes the main heading, often a logo name instead of the page topic.
  • More than one H1 heading: The page has two or more H1 headings, so visitors and screen reader users cannot tell at a glance which one names the page.
