No H2 headings on the page

What it is

The page contains no <h2> heading with text: there is none, or every one is empty. H2s are the section headings under the H1: they split a page into parts and say what each part covers. A long article or landing page without them reads as one block, while a short page, such as a contact or login page, may not need any.

Why it matters

Sighted readers scan headings to find the part they came for, and screen reader users move between them  the same way. Headings also label what each passage is about, so search engines and AI assistants that quote one passage in answer to a question are likely to find the right one more easily on a page with clear sections. A page whose sections are styled text instead of headings loses both.

How Asky checks it

Asky counts the <h2> elements anywhere in the page’s raw HTML, including headers and footers; headings added by JavaScript are not seen. The page is reported when no H2 has text after trimming whitespace, so a page whose only H2s are empty is reported too. Text that only looks like a heading, a styled <div> or <p>, does not count. The page’s length and type are not considered, so short pages are reported too.

Reported as a warning with low severity.

How to fix it

  1. On a long page, split the content into sections and give each a descriptive H2 that says what the section covers.
  2. If the page already has visual section titles, check their tags: styled <div> or <p> elements, or <h3> elements directly under the H1, should become <h2>. In Webflow, change the element’s tag; in WordPress, set the heading block’s level.
  3. Keep each H2 to 70 characters or fewer, or it is reported as over 70 characters.
  4. If the page has empty <h2> elements, such as unused template slots, give them a section title or remove them.
  5. Do not add a hidden H2 just to clear the finding: an empty one does not count, and a hidden one with text passes the check but helps no reader.
  6. To leave it as it is: for a short page with a single purpose, such as a contact, login or thank-you page, mark the issue resolved.

Example

On https://example.com/blog/pricing-guide the section titles were bold paragraphs:

<!-- Before --> <h1>How to price a SaaS product</h1> <p class="section-title"><strong>Choose a pricing model</strong></p> <!-- After --> <h1>How to price a SaaS product</h1> <h2 class="section-title">Choose a pricing model</h2>
