More than 250 internal links on the page
What it is
The page’s HTML contains more than 250 links to your own site. Most of them usually come from templates: a mega menu, a large footer, tag clouds, archive and related-post lists, or the same menu written twice, once for desktop and once for mobile.
Why it matters
Your links tell search engines which pages you consider important. When a page links to hundreds of pages, each link is likely to count for less, and the few links in the content that matter most are harder to tell apart from template noise. Visitors meet the same problem in a crowded menu. Google says there is no ideal number of links for a page, but that if it looks like too much, it probably is, so this is about focus, not a hard ceiling.
How Asky checks it
Asky counts the <a href> links in the page’s raw HTML whose address, resolved against the page URL, lands on the page’s own host: relative links and absolute or scheme-relative links to that host. Links added by JavaScript are not seen, and fragments such as #top, empty hrefs and mailto:, tel: and javascript: links are ignored. Every link element counts, so a menu repeated in the header and footer, or for desktop and mobile, counts twice. The page is reported when the count is over 250. It runs in every audit, selected pages included, on every page Asky fetched that answers without a 4xx or 5xx error.
Reported as a warning with low severity.
How to fix it
- Check how much the template adds: if a short page with the same header and footer comes close to 250, fix the template, not the page.
- Trim the mega menu to top-level sections and hub pages, and let those hubs link deeper.
- Render the menu once for all screen sizes instead of separate desktop and mobile copies.
- Cap tag clouds, archives and related-post lists at the most relevant items.
- Keep the contextual links in your content. Pages that lose their content links from other pages may be reported for too few inlinks or navigation-only inlinks.
- To leave it as it is: if the page is a sitemap-style index or a large category hub meant to link to everything, mark the issue resolved.
Example
Every page on https://example.com includes a 180-link mega menu, written once for desktop and once for mobile. Rendering it once, with 40 links to section hubs, takes https://example.com/blog/pricing-guide from 410 internal links to about 90.
