Page title over 561 pixels wide
What it is
The page title, the text in the <title> element, is estimated to be wider than 561 pixels when shown in a search result. What fits depends on the letters and the screen: a W or M takes more room than an i or l, and whatever does not fit is replaced by an ellipsis.
Why it matters
Google has no length limit for titles but truncates title links as needed to fit the device width. Whatever comes after the cut is not seen by the searcher, so a benefit, a qualifier or the brand at the end of a long title does no work in the results. If the opening words already say what the page is, the cost is small.
How Asky checks it
Asky reads the first <title> inside the <head> of the page’s raw HTML (a title set by JavaScript is not seen) and trims whitespace at both ends. It does not measure rendered text: the width is estimated as the number of characters × 7 pixels, and an estimate above 561 is reported. In practice that means a title of 81 characters or more, whatever its letters, while real widths vary with the letters and the device. 561 pixels is an industry estimate of desktop title width, not a limit Google publishes. Every title reported here is also reported as over 60 characters.
Reported as an opportunity with low severity.
How to fix it
- Shorten the title to 60 characters or fewer. That clears this finding and the over 60 characters one together; keep at least 30, or it is reported as below 30 characters.
- Put the words people search for first and the detail after them.
- Drop filler, repeated words and keyword lists, and shorten a long brand suffix or leave it out: Google shows your site name separately.
- If your CMS or SEO plugin adds the site name to every title through a template, count that suffix in the length.
- To leave it as it is: if the first 60 characters already say what the page is, mark this issue and the over 60 characters issue resolved.
Example
The title of https://example.com/pricing at 100 characters, then rewritten at 49:
<!-- Before: 100 characters, estimated at 700 pixels -->
<title>Pricing Plans for Marketing Teams, Agencies and Enterprises: Compare Features and Costs | Example Co</title>
<!-- After: 49 characters, estimated at 343 pixels -->
<title>Pricing Plans for Teams and Agencies | Example Co</title>
